RED SISKIN INITIATIVE

The Red Siskin is a tiny (10cm long) bird that is highly endangered in its native Venezuelan habitat due to a century and a half of massive illegal trapping and trading. Ruhl Walker Architects is proud to be a part of the Red Siskin Initiative along with the Smithsonian Institution and several other US and South American NGO’s. The Red Siskin Initiative’s goal is to understand, protect, and restore sustainable populations of this iconic bird in Venezuela and Guyana. We are providing pro bono design services for the design of the Cardenalito Conservation Center Bararida, which will be a part of the Parque Zoologico y Botanico Bararida, a world renowned zoo and botanical garden in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.  The facility will be a rehabilitation and breeding facility for the red siskin as well as an educational center that will focus on progress with reestablishing this endangered species into its native habitats.  Our design was unveiled at The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia a few weeks ago.  Check out the design and images from the unveiling below:
